Wheatear @Claerwen

Very cold and winter has yet to loosen its grip up at Claerwen! However a hardy male Wheatear braved the car park and the number of Blackbirds (10) by the dam itself suggested migrants. In a field by Ciloerwynt farm, 50+ Meadow Pipits waiting for the hills to warm up a little. There was a noteable number of Black backed Gulls around today (Lessers), an overlooked migrant bird. Two adult birds at Glanllyn looked to be performing some sort of display on the waters edge until I realised they were pecking at a dead lamb beneath the shallow water. There were a few pairs of Goosander about – at Dolymynach, Glanllyn and at the Wye / Elan junction pool. Bird of the day though was the Osprey I saw at Nantmel Tip, which flew off towards Rhayader. Perhaps it was the missing Nora from the Dyfi Osprey project! A Woodcock at the tip and a mixed flock of 20 Fieldfare, 10 Starling and 15 Redwing above Llanwrthwl meant that overall, todays birding had a distinct late winter feel to it.
