Despite the continuing cold weather I had my first Redstarts (2 males) this afternoon up near the end of the tarmac below Gamrhiw, Llanwrthwl. They were 6 days later than last years first. Nearby a Grasshopper warbler was also my first of the year and my first (very late) Willow warbler sang nearby. A yellowhammer was back on territory. Saw my first Swallow of the year over Llanwrthwl bridge on saturday 7th and Richard had the first Pied Flycatchers back at The Cwm on sunday. Still low numbers and generally later than last year, which is not suprising given the differences in weather. I note that last year the first cuckoos appeared on the 15th – so who will be the first to hear one (this weekend?) around here?
