Moth Trapping. Sunday 25th March 2012 10a.m. Coed y Cefn. Meet at the layby near Ochr Lon on the B4518 Rhayader – Elan Valley road. 1 mile west of Cwmdauddwr. SN962673. (Same woods as we surveyed last year). The event consists of emptying the traps and recording the species, which could be a fairly quick affair depending on the nightime temp and consequent catch.
Rhayader by nature has been successful in applying for funding for light weight moth trapping equipment. This will allow us to trap moths (and other insects and bugs) in our biodiversity study areas, including more remote parts where carrying car batteries or generators has made previous attempts impractical. Radnorshire has over 1000 species of moths recorded. Huge swathes of our area have less than 100 species on record and many kilometers have no records at all (to put that into persepective, my Llanwrthwl garden had 180 species recorded last year). The southern part of Rhayader town has less than 50 species recorded for example.
To improve that knowledge we will be trapping regularly over the next 6 months or so. This will start this weekend. The traps will be set on saturday night, so please come along and see whats in them on sunday!
