The nights have got chillier and there is a distinct autumn feel in the air. The annual gathering of Swallows and House Martins on lines and rooves in Llanwrthwl has started. Each morning there are usually around 200 House Martins and lesser numbers of Swallows. The Martins tend to be mostly juveniles. Larger numbers of Swallows usually appear in the evening. This spectacle usually attracts the attention of a Hobby, but not so far this year. In addition there was a lovely female Whitethroat in bushes past the cattlegrid at Penrhos yesterday evening. I notice there have been a few migrating Whitethroats around in North Wales, Bardsey Island and Portland Bill today, so this bird may have been just heading south.
