Blue Tit cam

Out of the 9 eggs layed in our camerabox this year, 7 hatched. that number gradually dwindled until there were only 2 left. I have no idea why 5 chicks died – there was no evidence of predation. Both survivors left the box on the 15th June and could be heard calling from the Horse Chestnut behind the house for a couple of days afterwards.

Incredibly, as the Blue Tits left the box, a Spotted Flycatcher started building a nest on its roof! I think this was the pair that failed across the road and were attempting a second go. I have checked the nest tonight – its very sheltered under the eaves and can’t be seen from below. There are 4 eggs in the nest. There seems to be good numbers of spotted flycatchers around this year – with at least 6 pairs in and around Llanwrthwl village.
