Blue tits

A pair of blue tits took up residence in a  camera nestbox in the garden, about three weeks ago. The nest was built in the space of two days – of dried grass and sheep fleece. Since then the nest has been largely unused during the day – with one of the birds roosting in it at night. I thought it may be too late for a breeding attempt this year  – according to Richards records, blue tits average laying date around here is April 27th. So I switched on the tv to see what was going on this afternoon, to step back in amazement – 9 eggs had been layed since yesterday!

Hi Steve. She couldn’t have laid 9 eggs overnight. One each day is normal. Titmice tend to cover their eggs over with nest material until the full clutch is laid and incubation started so she probably began this clutch 9 days ago.

Thanks Pip – I did wonder – but there was absolutely no sign of them over the last week, so she must have had them well covered. If she layed the ninth yesterday then uncovered them, she started laying about the 6th, a more ‘normal’ date. I guess I can wait until they begin to hatch and work out approximately when she finished laying from there. She was on the nest all day today, with a short break to go to the birdfeeders in the garden this afternoon.
