While these explorations and activities are made at a leisurely pace and are not arduous for someone of averagefitness it is the responsibility of each individual taking part to ensure that they are fit enough to take part and wear clothing appropriate to the conditions. January, Tuesday 24th  –  ‘Salmon and the River Wye’  –  a talk by Dr Stephen Marsh-Smith OBE Executive Director of the Wye and Usk Foundation.  At CARAD, East Street, Rhayader at 7.30pm.

 February, Thursday 16th  –  ‘Fungi – mushrooms and toadstools’  –  a talk by Dr Ray Woods of Plantlife.  At CARAD, East Street, Rhayader at 7.30pm. 

 March, Tuesday 27th –  ‘Birds in Wales’ – the work of the newly established Wales Office of the British Trust for Ornithology – a talk by Kelvin Jones BTO Wales Development Officer.  At CARAD, East Street, Rhayader at 7.30pm.

April: Thur 26  -  Our AGM and a showing of the locally made film ‘Inspired by Nature’ 

Celebrating the natural history of Rhayader and district.  There will also be a raffle, with great prizes including a pairof compact binoculars, and a mystery objects table  -  so bring along any weird and wonderful objects you have to puzzle others.   CARAD, Rhayader, 7.30pm.

May: Sun 20  -  Woodland exploration at Coed y Cefn  -  this is a magical place inhabited no doubt by fairies!  Enjoy a guided tour with Richard Knight and others.  Meet at roadside lay-by on B4581 ½ mileeast of Rhayader town at 10.00am (return 12.45).  Map ref. SN 962674.

 June: Sat 23  -  National Moth Morning at ye old Nantmel tip  -  come and see what was caught thenight before. This is an ideal opportunity to see some beautiful moths in the company of those who know their stuff.  Meet at the entrance to the now disused tip at 10.00am (return 12.45).  Map ref. SO 016659. Guides: Steve Jones and Pete and Ginny Clark the county moth recorders.  This is a joint event with Radnorshire Wildlife Trust.

 July: Tues 3  -  Evening Woodland and Meadow Walk  -  a joint event with the Elan Valley Ranger Service, Radnorshire Wildlife Trust and Plantlife.  See some of the best flower-rich upland meadows remaining in Britain. A gentle 1-mile walk, uphill in parts.  Guided by Ray Woods of Plantlife and Sorcha Lewis EVRS.  Meet at Pennygarreg Dam car park at 7.00pm (return approx 9.00pm). Map ref. SN 915673.

 Aug: Sun 19  -  Open Day at The Cwm, Llanwrthwl  -  enjoy the results of nearly 25 years of careful habitat management work at this private nature reserve.  Richard and Pam Knight invite members and friends to a guided tour of their wild-place.  Meet at The Cwm house at 10.30am.  Sept: Sun 2  -  River life  -  make time for a paddle with bucket and net.  Nets provided but bring you own wellies if you want to go in.  Great fun for adults and children alike.  Get to know your fish and water bugs.  Bring tales if you are an x-poacher!  Meet at Rhayader Rugby Club car park in Water Lane at 10.30am (return 12.45pm).  Map ref.  Oct: Sun 21  -  Cattle and nature conservation   -  a food commodity yes, but also an essential tool in

the conservation of the nation’s wildlife.  Farmers James and Owain Pugh and others tell the story from the past to the present.  Meet at Doliago Farm, Llanwrthwl at 2.30pm (return 4.30pm).  Map ref. SN 966638.
