Coed y cefn, Rhayader has been chosen as the study site for woodland habitat for the group. Sited a mile to the west of Rhayader on the Elan Valley road, the wood has a range of habitats typical of the area. An area of coniferous plantation with bracken, young oak woodland, more open mature oak, some mixed woodland and an area of scots pine plantation. The latter is less typical of the area.
The group met on May 30th to carry out a test survey of species. The woodland is particularly noted for its many colonies of wood ant – which make the wood an SSSI. The ants were everywhere!
Species lists will appear here once collated.
